Chantal T. Spitz

Author

Chantal T. Spitz has worked as a teacher, educational adviser and technical adviser to the Ministry of Culture. For many years, she has been working to shatter the neo-colonialist myth which rewrites history and perpetuates the collective caricature of Tahitians as “noble savages”. In her work, Spitz questions the official historical narrative which presents Indigenous people of French Polynesia as people who have no power over their own destiny. Spitz is also very active on the cultural and independence fronts and has taken part in the anti-nuclear movement that emerged after the first French tests took place in 1966. She is also a contributor to Littéramā’ohi, a literary journal launched in 2000, whose main objective is to promote the diversity, richness and specificity of Indigenous literature of French Polynesia.
